All’inizio della nuova stagione il direttore di un teatro di provincia piuttosto malridotto presenta alla sua compagnia un nuovo collega: il giovane regista Kai Finke che vuole mettere in scena Aspettando Godot di Samuel Beckett. Kai si mette al lavoro con un certo entusiasmo e non si lascia intimorire dalle desolanti circostanze. Gli causa più problemi la mancanza di entusiasmo dei suoi collaboratori\, le prove vanno avanti con tenacia e indecisione. Per il regista\, tuttavia\, i paralleli fra la situazione politica e la pièce sono evidenti; egli desidera soprattutto attualizzare la disperata condizione dell’attesa. Quando Horst\, il suo attore protagonista\, gli chiede dove abbia luogo questa condizione senza via d’uscita\, nella testa o nelle circostanze\, Kai non sa dargli una risposta.
