History and Goals

Founded in 1935 as the research organ of Villa Sciarra, «Studi Germanici» is the oldest academic journal of German Studies in Italy, making a crucial contribution to the field. Its scope reflects the broad horizons that this discipline has always embraced in Italy. While philological and literary studies form its core, the journal encompasses the entirety of Germanic culture, understood in its full geopolitical diversity and expressed through multiple disciplines: from linguistics to philosophy, from art history to musicology, from social sciences to history, from film studies to archaeology. A distinctive feature of the journal (and of the Institute it represents) is its openness to the Scandinavian and Dutch-speaking areas, which have historically been integral parts of the Germanic world and are closely connected to it. Since its inception, «Studi Germanici» has embraced multi- and cross-disciplinary approaches to research, establishing itself as a key methodological reference in the humanities.

«Studi Germanici» publishes articles covering this broad thematic spectrum in Italian, German, English and French. The journal is published biannually (June and December). In addition to its regular issues, it will feature special thematic issues curated by the Italian Association of Germanic Studies through 2025.

The journal is hosted on the website of the Istituto Italiano di Studi Germanici, ensuring web access in the event of its discontinuation. It is financially supported by the Istituto Italiano di Studi Germanici, which does not generate any revenue from its publications.

The Peer Review Process

The selection of reviewers for each submission is carried out by the editors and the editorial board, taking into account various factors, including expertise in the subject matter, experience and any previous reviewing activity for «Studi Germanici».

Each manuscript submitted for publication undergoes an initial assessment by the Editor-in-Chief and/or the Managing Editor, as well as at least one member of the editorial board. If the submission is deemed suitable for the journal at this stage, it is sent to at least two reviewers for a thorough evaluation. The journal follows a double-blind peer review process, where the author does not know the identity of the reviewers, nor do the reviewers know the identity of the author. In case of conflicting reviews, a third reviewer is consulted.

The purpose of the review process is to provide authors with a well-founded and reasoned evaluation of the quality of their submission and, when necessary, to offer suggestions for improvement. Reviewers are asked to assess the manuscript’s adherence to commonly accepted standards of scholarly quality. The review process does not involve debating the validity of specific theses or methodologies but, rather, ensuring that appropriate quality standards are met.

Articles considered for publication must address topics of established scholarly relevance and demonstrate a well-structured organization of material, familiarity with the state of the art, a consistently applied methodology, strong interpretative skills and clear presentation. The final decision on the publication of articles rests with the Managing Editor, the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial board.
